A+ A A-

PFD's

Discussion started by Susan Simmons 3 years ago
I was wondering if the Coast Guard has exempted SUP boards outside the surfline from carrying PFD's. Several SUP shops gave me different stories ranging from "You're exempted" to "They just don't enforce that here." Has anybody heard this info? Or is it bogus?

Thanks, Susan

it's bogus. it's the same nationally. you can of course use an inflatable or just don't use one at all and hope your local harbor police or cg don't mind. as a kayaker, i've worn one for years and don't even think about having it on! cheers.

In the united kingdom there is no big brother telling you what to do. However, I wear a kayak slalom PFD in the winter for warmth and it is not restricting at all.

Well, I broke the bank and bought two PFD's for me and my husband. Thank you everybody for your input. I guess now I can tell the Coast Guard to leave me alone! LOL

You need one in Canada (and a whistle, and a reg throwbag). Mustang makes a inflatable belt pfd that is just perfect... not sure how it is Transport Canada approved as it would be useless if you passed out, BUT it IS approved and I love mine!

Thanks, Michael. I know at Lake Havasu, AZ they don't seem to enforce this rule. But Big Bear Lake, CA might. I'll find out if I get caught because there is so much differing info. You're info is right according to the USCG, but they're also trying to reverse this rule. Hopefully soon!

The USCG now says SUP is a vessel. A pfd must be onboard or on you outside the surf zone. A leash is needed in the surf zone.
