I use a half coil and half straight leash, not FCS, for surfing and like it a lot. Thinking about trying a straigt coil calf leash and seeing how that works. I tried one before but it was an ankle leash and I kept stepping on it. Anyone have some thoughts or experience?

Thanks for the tip on the vest Morgan. If I head to Colorado this June, you got to make sure you get more setup with some of this survival sup kit items.

Andre, you're correct with the agreement to not attach to your person. It's just not safe that way. The rescue vest that I wear is the Astral Green Jacket. IMO Astral leads the whitewater market for Personal Floatation Devices. Kokatat and Stohlquist also make a top quality rescue vest though.

Try before you buy if possible! It's alot about the fit with those three brands.

Happy Paddling!

Morgan, love the thorough insights! Thanks for sharing. The agreement seems to be that if you wear a leash you have to make sure that it's not attached to your knee or ankle but rather your PFD.

Are there any specific PFD brands that you recommend that work with attaching the leash?

Some good all around points here. I have to disagree with Alex here though. I think it is important to wear a leash in white water. My back ground with SUP is 90% white water and I wear on every single time I go out. You do need to be trained how to properly attach it to a Class V RESCUE PFD and more importantly get trained on when and how to release the leash & board. SUP'ing in White Water is a technical sport, a Swiftwater Rescue class is advisable to anyone looking to do it.

As far as the FCS coil leashes, I'm a huge fan; for the rivers and the waves. While paddling the rivers the leashes stay out of the water for the most part and can't snag on any rocks or wood in the water. I don't get tangled up in the leash as I sometimes do with a standard style.

For the waves the FCS coiled leash works well for me in a couple ways. I'm a complete beginner when it comes to SUP Surfing, but I charge as much as I can = I fall quite a bit right now while trying turns and other moves. When I go down the coiled leash absorbs a good deal of the shock from the waves grabbing the big board and pushing it forward. There is no more "jerk" when the leash stretches out. It also stays out of my way while paddling and getting back up on the board.

The FCS coil leash is a great piece to have in the gear bag. They have 3 different sizes for the waves you are getting after. I always keep two with me when hitting the water!

Excellent note Alex! It's not advisable to wear a leash in the rapids unless it's hooked to your PFD/vest.

In white water its best to not wear a leash. But if you are going to wear one this would the one to get so you can hook it to a life vest and keep it out of the water!

I've had an excellent experience with this leash and couldn't recommend it enough. In fact, it's so good that I lent it to someone to try it and I haven't seen it again since then. I got several of my friends using it and they're all stoked.
