2 Major Stand Up Paddle Events Are Back to Back

NEWPORT BEACH & HUNTINGTON BEACH, California - Summer time is just around the corner and May 4th and 5th 2013 are two days to block out for SUP!·Saturday May 4th is the 2nd Annual Stand Up For the Cure event and Sunday May 5th is the Inaugural Performance Paddling Junior Pro & Youth SUP Fiestapresented by Ocean Minded.·
The two, separately organized, events will pull together some of the greatest aspects of our sport: sharing, caring, competition, health, and fun. There will also be an amazing gathering of talent from across the globe including athletes from California, Oahu, Maui, Florida, Idaho, Oregon, and Australia. These groms will be competing for $5000 in prize money on Sunday, but they will also being helping with the Clinics at the Standup for the Cure event on Saturday.
“It is going to be a very exciting weekend in Southern California May 4th and 5th. We are so proud that the Performance Paddling Junior Pro participants will be joining Standup For the Cure on Saturday May 4th “ says Shawneen Schweitzer. She continues, “Our youth are our future and it is a great (representation) of the athletes we have in our sport. I’m honored they are amped and ready to volunteer at the Standup for the Cure by teaching the sport they love to 1,000s of people while raising awareness to the important issue of breast cancer.”
Kristi Page will be coming from Victoria, Australia on her first overseas trip to compete in the Junior Pro. She explains, "I can't wait to help out with the Stand Up for a Cure clinics. Nothing makes me happier than being given such a great opportunity to pass on the passion and spirit of SUP to others." Kristi also shared, "It's been my dream for a long time now to be able to compete against some of the world's best juniors and now I've finally got my chance. I have never been more excited."
“One in seven women locally get affected by breast cancer, and only 1 in 5 have health insurance,” explains Judie Vivian of Standup for the Cure. "Along with fundraising to enable mammograms for women who have no insurance, and raising awareness of breast cancer to people of all ages, especially the younger generation, Standup for the Cure has the motto, 'Have Fun and Save Lives.' What a fabulous weekend this will (be) for everyone interested in Stand Up Paddling (and) supporting the fight against breast cancer!"
As mentioned above, many young athletes will be on hand in Newport Beach, however, there will be more than just Junior Pro’s around. An array of adult professional sup athletes will be on hand for the weekend as well. Billabong XXL nominee, Maverick’s charger, Matt Becker will be coming down from Santa Barbara to share his love for paddling. He will also be joined by Brandi Baksic, Brennan Rose, Dave Boehne, Collin McPhillips, and many more.
What a weekend this will be, so come join the fun! The action will take place at Newport Dunes, Newport Beach, California on Saturday and Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach, California on Sunday.
If you are not able to join in person, the Junior Pro & Youth SUP Fiesta will be broadcast Live and in HD by Supconnect. No one has to miss the Sunday action and everyone will be able to donate to Standup for the Cure. The thousands who take part in the clinics on Saturday will be able to watch their “instructors” compete on Sunday in the Junior Pro sup surf contest, or the Pro Expression Session.
