OAHU, Hawaii – Rumors of a death related to stand up paddle surfing started to emerge yesterday (Feb. 22, 2011) on the social networks Facebook and Supconnect. According to the posts, a stand up paddler surfing on the North Shore of Oahu had drowned in the morning while out in the lineup.

This would have marked the first known casualty of the sport out in the surf and the third overall fatal accident since the passing of the two German stand up paddle boarders who drowned in a rapids in Bavaria last year.

But the rumors were misleading, said the authorities. “The stand up paddler was surfing the very north end of the island when he suffered a heart attack,” said one of the firefighters on the North Shore. “At the moment, he is alive and in no critical condition.” The name of the stand up paddle boarder has not been released and no further details have been made public.
