LAGUNA BEACH, California – Anyone would tell you that a successful marriage requires love, balance and some effort.  Recently, Jonathan and Marley Mammele demonstrated all the above as they took their wedding party to the ocean, where they stood on stand up paddle boards while sharing their vows on a beautiful November evening in Laguna Beach.

The unique ceremony was the suggestion of their friend Charnae Wright, who as an ordained minister has performed several weddings but never while on a SUP. “Considering the love for the ocean and paddleboarding that Marley and Jon have,” says Charnae, “it seemed like the perfect way and place for them to profess their love to each other.”

“Plus it’s way sexier than going to the courthouse!,” said Marley grinning.  “We knew we would have to be flexible about the date to consider the weather, but it was perfect. The ocean was glass.”

Once the wedding party attendees paddled out and took their positions to the sides of the couple, the paddles were used to keep them “hitched.”  The bride, standing fittingly on her Tahoe SUP “Bliss” and the groom on a Tahoe SUP “Zephyr,” shared their vows facing one another.

No cold feet or any weakness in the knees were reported from bride or groom. “The Tahoe SUP boards were really stable,” said Jon.  “We were able to stand sideways on the boards to read each other our vows, give our rings and, of course, kiss.”

Family and friends gathered and paddled around the couple, scattering rose petals, taking pictures and serving champagne on the boards for a sunset toast.  “This was by far the most beautiful wedding I have officiated or attended,” admits Charnae.  “I believe the water is a magical place and to be united in love and marriage on the ocean is about as amazing as it gets! The couple wrote the most touching vows and my favorite part was when they balanced one foot on each others board and made a toast.”
