AUSTIN, Texas – The Austin SUP Games were held on October, 22nd in the bastion of liberal thinking and free-form lifestyle in the middle of Texas. Among the many events held to entertain, maintain, and strain those in attendance, the SUPZILLA set a new record for most paddlers on a stand up paddleboard at the same time.
So what the heck is a SUPZILLA? Well, it’s NOT the product of an amorous encounter between a gorilla and a stand up paddleboard, as the name may have indicated. The SUPZILLA is a monstrous stand up paddleboard. How monstrous? The one used at the Austin SUP Games was large enough to hold 34 paddlers at the same time. Good enough to set a new record.
Other events at the Austin SUP Games included a Slalom Buoy Course, SUP Jousting, Water War, and the Angry Balls Obstacle Course, loosely based on the addicting iPhone application Angry Birds. A portion of the proceeds from the event went to the Flatwater Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting the mental wellness of families coping with cancer.
Austin has quickly become an awesome spot to stand up paddleboard, with multiple bodies of water to explore and just as many places to rent or buy a great SUP. Check out the article about SUP in Austin on SUP Connect and then get your butt there for the next Austin SUP Games!
