Paddle Board Highlights
Who is it for?
If a very stable, all around inflatable that can also be used for SUP fishing is something you’re looking for, the Blackfin Model X is a must-see. The Model X is a really affordable option and great for both beginners and experienced paddlers alike. This board comes a la carte, meaning it only comes with the board, fins and repair kit. So, if you have all the other necessities like a paddle, pump and leash, this might be a good option when all you’re looking for is the board itself. However, if you need a complete package, those other items are all add ons. The starting price for the Model X is at $749.99 which puts it in the mid-tier market in terms of affordability.
First Impressions
First impression: this board is quality. It’s got a really strong and durable feel and can support a lot of weight despite its shorter length. Typically, a board this size we would recommend for more petite paddlers but in this case this board’s capacity is quite big and larger paddlers should be just fine. When it comes to the graphics we really like what we see. The board has a really nice coloring with a mix of gray, blue and yellow. If those aren’t your colors then you’re in luck because this board comes in six different color variations so you’re sure to find something you like. Another thing we really enjoy about this board are the details. For example, the deckpad has the brand logo etched into it rather than having a generic diamond pattern to it. This is a very small, but powerful detail. Another small, powerful detail is in the bungees on the nose and tail of the board. Both bungees have what can be used as a grab handle which is much easier to grip if you’re carrying little ones on board with you. The board also features a ton of attachment points so skys the limit here if you want a ton of bells and whistles. These attachment points really make the board a great option if you’re interested in SUP fishing. Another standout feature is how the board incorporates a carbon rail. This feature is such a value-add and really helps the boards rigidity and how it performs on the water. This does make the board slightly heavier than other inflatable boards this size but the tradeoff here is worth it. Now when it comes to the package on offer, Blackfin here is taking an a la carte approach where you only need to buy what you want/need. So, if you already have a paddle and a pump for example and all you want is the board, this is a really great in that you don’t end up with a bunch of gear you don’t need. On the other hand, this might be a deterrent for beginner who doesn’t necessarily know what they need in a SUP package. That being said, we went through the checkout process on their website to give this a la carte system a whirl and it was really easy and serves up the additional items you might want/need. Just keep that in mind here. On the water the board was SO stable which was expected since the width is 35in and the glide was pretty average which is also expected with that more all-around shape. Overall, this board is great for someone looking for a lot of stability and for someone who wants the ability to add a lot of attachments. The board itself is a really good, quality board and for that it gets our A-grade.
