BIC SUP Expedition paddler Mike Simpson prepares for 12 days and 400 mile on the Conneticut River.
STEWARTSTOWN, New Hampshire - BIC Sport, world leader in watersports, is excited to announce that BIC SUP ambassador Mike Simpson will be embarking on his next expedition July 15th down the historic Connecticut River.
Simpson is best known for his 2,000 mile epic journey from Key West, FL to Portland, ME to raise awareness of ocean pollution and funds for the Wounded Warrior Project. This latest trip will take Mike back in time by slowing down his pace to that of our ancestors who were involved in logging, the fur trade and searching for the Northwest Passage along this same river corridor. He will begin in Stewartstown, NH at the Canadian border and arrive in Old Lyme, CT where the river drains into the Long Island Sound.
“I’m excited to get back on the water for a mulit-day trip” said Simpson. “We’re planning for 12 days on the water, meaning we need to average over 30 miles each day” he added. The river is running at a high volume from recent rains, which will make for a faster pace but also potentially more hazardous currents and rapids. Mike will draw on his diverse background in whitewater paddling, ocean surfing and expedition paddling to complete this latest milestone.
Simpson’s last multi-day trip was a 175 mile journey down the Hudson River from Troy, NY to Manhattan, a trip he completed using BIC Sport’s award-winning 12’6 WING Paddleboard (the WING received Outside Magazine’s 2013 “Gear of the Year” award). Mike will again use the 12’6 WING for this latest trip and will be fully loaded with gear as he plans to complete the journey with no outside support. He will be joined along his journey by a multitude of local paddleboarders who plan to accompany him along sections of the river that flow through their neighborhoods.
You can follow Mike’s progress and check out photos and updates from the river at the BIC SUP Facebook Page.
