Honolulu, Hawaii - The stand up paddling world will be turning its attention to the birth place of the sport once again. On June 12-13 the 2010 Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle will take place at Duke Kahanamoku Beach at Ft. DeRussy. The Battle of the Paddle includes a series of SUP races and more. For the pros it offers a cash purse of over $25,000 making it the most prestigious SUP race on the planet. In addition there is an Open Age-Group race, Distance Race, Relay Race, and Kids Races.
Along with the competitive events, Hawaii's Na Kama Kai organization founded by professional surfer and stand up paddler, Duane DeSoto, will partner with the Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle. They will provide free ocean awareness and safety clinics for 150 children over the weekend. Duane and his staff will be teaching kids general ocean skills including surf lessons, races and more. Surftech is proud to be providing the boards that Na Kama Kai will use to teach the kids.
Surftech's team of elite paddlers will be on hand to challenge the worlds best competitors for the coveted Battle of the Paddle crown. Australia's Jamie Mitchell will be defending his 2009 Battle of the Paddle Doheny title this weekend. Jamie will be flying directly from Bali to Oahu the Friday before the event in hopes of retaining his title. Surftech's newest team member, Candice Appleby (Honolulu, Hi) is hoping to improve upon her 2nd place finish in Doheny last year. While Maui's Slater Trout will also be aiming to improve upon his runner-up placing to Jamie in last year's race.
For Surftech the Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle is an opportunity to share the Aloha Spirit that originated in Hawaii and has been spread throughout the rest of the world via the great sport of stand up paddling. "Surftech, from the beginning of the stand up paddle revolution, has made a major commitment to this exciting, new aspect of surfing." commented Gerry Lopez. "Having Surftech directly involved in the Battle of the Paddle Hawaii insures an even better event."
In addition to supporting their team of athletes, Surftech Hawaii will be providing an impressive fleet of demo boards for all to try including their highly anticipated race boards: the 12'6" Jamie Mitchell and the 12'6" Bark Competitor.
