SAN DIEGO, California – San Diego arguably offers the best venues for stand up paddle (sup) board racing in Southern California. It not only has ocean access all along its coastline but also offers a barrage of other waterways, such as Mission Bay, San Diego Bay, and Coronado, plus myriad lakes spread all throughout San Diego County. In addition, San Diego County offers the largest number of surf breaks in Southern California, providing ample opportunity to replicate Battle of the Paddle sup race conditions, where waves play a pivotal role in the shaping of the course. Yet, sup racers in San Diego are not nearly as organized and committed to sup race training sessions as their fellow sup racers to the north in Orange County, more particularly, Dana Point, who meet regularly for paddle training sessions. Find sup event in your area.

That seems to be about to change. A group of stand up paddle (sup) board enthusiasts, who are deeply involved in the sport, will be gathering on Wednesdays at 6pm on Mission Bay, at Santa Clara Street. “It’s about time for San Diego to have its own sup training sessions,” says Andre Niemeyer, president of Supconnect and San Diego resident. “We have some of the best waterways for the sport in Southern California, an incredibly large population of waterman, and yet we lag behind several other communities when it comes down to organized training sessions aimed at sup races.”

The training sessions will focus specifically on stand up paddle (sup) board racing, deploying several different training methods, such as tabulating time, breaking down stroke technique, inviting elite guest trainers, and more. Attendance is free and open to the public. According to the event organizers, the ultimate goal is to improve San Diego sup race performances and develop a robust sup race group. “During the Stand Up Round Up on Sunday Andre (from SUPconnect), Gillian Gibree, and I talked about rallying the San Diego troops weekly in an attempt to get in a good workout, build some local community/camaraderie, and help push San Diego paddling athletes to the front of the SoCal racing pack (or keep them there for those of you that already hold that position),” said Chris Hill, an avid sup racer and Mission Beach local.
