SAN DIEGO, California – Imagine a stand up paddle (sup) board bonanza in a perfect venue to go out and paddle with friends, family, and fellow competitors. That’s pretty much what the audience got with the Standup Roundup in San Diego, California. The event was held at Bonita Cove, Mission Bay, under excellent weather and paddle conditions, that is, calm waters and little-to-no boat traffic. Befriend Dan Van Dyck, the event organizer.
There was something for everyone. A sup race running about 3 miles long, demo for beginners, a unique tug-of-war among sup racers, and a knockout race, where stand up paddle (sup) boarders would get knocked out through various rounds leading to a final duel of the two fastest sprinters. And if you paid the $25 nominal fee to enter the race (no fee was required to demo boards), you also got an event t-shirt as part of the package.
Vendors, too, had plenty of smiles on their faces. When you combine those planning to attend with the sheer foot-traffic from Bonita Cove, Mission Bay the end result was a deluge of people interested in testing boards and giving their first shot at the sport of stand up paddle (sup) boarding. Mission Bay had all the elements in place for a successful stand up paddle (sup) event. But with the clear skies, warm temperatures, and large surrounding parking lots (all amounting to a very powerful catalyst) the Standup Roundup delivered a stellar opportunity for newcomers to the sport and also fun aplenty for those with a competitive appetite. Thanks to the sponsors who helped make it all possible, among which are Boardworks, Surftech, and FCS.
