SAN DIEGO, Ca – A San Diego local paddleboarded on Lake Cuyamaca during a historic winter storm, under heavy winds and snow fall. Andre Niemeyer, editor of Supconnect.com, a popular online standup paddle hub, had witnessed hundreds of photos being posted on his website of paddleboarders from all over the world paddling in frigid and snowy conditions this winter. With the historic cold front headed toward Southern California, Niemeyer ceased on the opportunity to show some solidarity for his fellow paddlers. He climbed 4,600 ft to Lake Cuyamaca and went for a few strokes on his stand up paddle board this Saturday morning around 7am.
"I've been sitting at my desk and watching hundreds of photos pouring in on Supconnect, with people stand up paddling in incredibly cold weather," said Niemeyer. "When I found out that San Diego was supposed to get hit really hard with a cold front, I went to Big 5, got some snow gear, and got ready to head up to Lake Cuyamaca early Saturday morning."
Conditions, however, were harsher than the San Diego local expected. "Luckily, I had an outdoor veteran take me up there on his four-wheel drive," he said. "For I was definitely not expecting to encounter that much snow and wind up on the San Diego mountains. I am not at all a snow guy and mountains are not really my environment, so the decision to ask my friend to escort me more than paid off. We made it safely up there while many other cars were skidding off the road and into the ditch. We safely made it through, got some nice photos and footage, and headed back down with a big smile on our faces."
The storm alert for San Diego still remains in effect through Sunday morning, with some record setting low temperatures scheduled to hit the San Diego Mountains tonight and tomorrow morning. There will be more photos and a special Sup TV feature about Andre Niemeyer's adventure coming up this week on Supconnect.com.
