Karina_F_at_Shipwrecks_in_Indo

This photo uploaded by Karina Figl was taken at a break called Shipwreck off the island Nusa Lembongan. Karina explains, "Shipwreck is one of Nusa Lembongan most famous surf breaks, a right hander with a powerful take off area, peeling fast with a high, tight envelope and open shoulder."

Karina goes on to set the scene for us, "We knew Shipwreck can attract a crowd. Much can be said for crowds and naturally, paddling across to a famous break like shipwrecks on an SUP, with 35 surfers in the water, I was more than a little nervous. Yet, no boo-ing, shouting, no blank stares, no hassling, no bad vibe."

In a crowd, the best bet is to share and be respectful, regardless of what type of board is being ridden. Karina says, "I certainly had my fair share of waves, and, being on a SUP certainly had advantages, yet didn't exploit these excessively and shared my waves with fellow watermen/women. Respect, I believe, is what gets you a long way, not only in terms of vibe, but also in terms of how you enjoy your session. What goes around, comes around."

Liz_Froment_-_Dave_Cornthwaite

This picture, uploaded by SUP Connecter Liz Froment, shows Dave Cornthwaite taking some time to horse around on the Mississippi River. When you have been paddling for over a month and have already cleared the 1,000 mile mark, goofing around is almost a necessity.

For those of you who have not yet read about Dave's epic SUP Journey, he is currently making his way down the Mississippi River in an attempt to be the first person to SUP the entire length of the river unsupported, that is to say that he is carrying all his gear on the SUP with him (as pictured).

Check out the article on SUP Connect about Dave's SUP Journey and also go to his Facebook page and website for more information on the paddle.

Neil_Pearlberg_-_DogJam_2011

Uploaded by SUP Connecter Neil Pearlberg, the photo above shows an intrepid beagle pulling off a move that most of us still struggle with. With one paw over the nose, this pooch and his owner took part in the second annual DogJam in Santa Cruz, California this past weekend. Participants and their dogs competed in a variety of events including 'Best Trick' and 'Most Dogs on a SUP'.

Organized by local surf and SUP instructor Neil Pearlberg, the event raised over $1,000 for the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. When asked how he came up with the idea for the Dog Jam, Neil says, "I was watching the Westminster Dog Show on TV and the idea came to me that I could have a similar ‘dog show’ on SUPs in the flat water of the Santa Cruz Harbor.”

Check out the article on SUP Connect about the event and also see the rest of the pictures from Neil's DogJam2011 photo album.

Morene_Dekker_at_SUP_Sprint_CUP_2011

Dutch SUP Connecter Morene Dekker, arguably the strongest female stand up paddler in the Netherlands right now, took home first place at the Brunotti Sprint Cup in Sneek on August 6th. Under a cloudy sky, the event was held in Friesland, a province in the Netherlands better known for its dairy cows than its stand up paddleboarding.

The Netherlands is a great place to stand up paddle. An article recently published on SUP Connect by Morene Dekker highlights paddling in Amsterdam and other areas in Holland.

Thank you to all SUP Connect users for posting their photos. Keep uploading to be chosen for next week's photo feature.

Morgan Becker

After spending the first part of her life in Minnesota, Morgan traded in her snow boots for sandals and moved to sunny California. After graduating with a degree in Communication from The University of Southern California, she eventually made her way down south to San Diego and is taking advantage of the living by the best beaches and burritos California has to offer. If it’s sunny, you can find her at the beach relaxing, or exploring the calm water in the bay via paddleboards and kayaks.
