PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Mexico - Standup paddle surf contest went down in one of the world's heaviest waves, Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Waves were well in the head-high range and standup paddle surfers had to execute surgically precise turns to make through the barrel sections.
"They were coming in around 6-8ft occasionally bigger on sets, with a lot of barrels on tap," said Floridian surfer, Sean Poynter, winner of the first round of the event. "Found a couple good beat downs, along with a couple fun barrels. Luckily I found some good rides and finished the day with the best two waves of the day."
With money on the line for the top finishers, there was some extra pressure and heat pushing those riders out of the coverup rides. Claiming the top spot in the final matchup was Greg Carson, taking home USD 1,400.00, with Poynter in 2nd (USD 800.00), Haley Fiske 3rd (USD 450.00) tied with Thomas Kosmoll (USD 450.00) and Angel Salinas 4th ($ 100.00).
