SANTA BARBARA, California - Yesterday Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., 39, of Orcutt was killed by a shark while surfing at Surf Beach in Lompoc, Santa Barbara. The shark attacked his upper body and he was pulled out of the water by a friend who was surfing with him. Unfortunately by the time the paramedics made it to the beach, Francisco was already pronounced dead.
According to NBC 4 of Southern California, Lt. Erik Raney of the sheriff’s department's Santa Maria station, the surf board had "visible signs of bite marks." However, at this point in time no one knows exactly what type of shark attacked.
Interestingly enough, another surfer died at this same beach just two years ago in October when Lucas Ransom, who was just 19, was pulled under the water while body boarding approximately 100 yards from shore. He surfaced shortly later but his leg was really torn up and he did not last long. There is also a report of a surfers board being bitten back in 2008.
How does this make you feel about paddling and being in or on the water?
