AUSTIN, Texas – The Flatwater Foundation is pleased to announce a partnership with Tahoe SUP as the official paddle board sponsor for this year’s Tyler’s Dam That Cancer event, taking place on Monday, June 13, 2016. Each year, the event invites participants to travel a 21-mile course from Mansfield Dam on Lake Austin to Tom Miller Dam (Hula Hut) on stand-up paddle boards, in effort to raise funds and awareness toward mental health support that is critically important to those affected by cancer.
“We are really excited to have Tahoe SUP involved in our event and cause, as they brought flat water paddling to the masses and are the industry leader in paddle expeditions,” says Mark Garza, Founder and Executive Director of The Flatwater Foundation. “Their product is built for long trips on the water, to make the most out of life and allow people to comfortably connect with nature and clear their mind in a way that no other board can.”
In support of the event, Tahoe SUP is providing equipment to key paddlers, as well as donating paddle boards to the cause to help raise awareness and inspire people to get involved year-round. In addition, professional paddler Ronnie Ayres and Tahoe SUP founder, Nate Brouwer, will join this year’s 160 participating paddlers on the water.
"We find what Mark has done with The Flatwater Foundation and their event, Tyler’s Dam That Cancer, to be remarkable,” says Nate Brouwer, founder of Tahoe SUP. “From its infancy to what it is today, Flatwater embraces the true essence of philanthropic efforts through the sport of paddle boarding. We are looking forward to another year and a fantastic time on the water."
Thanks to Tahoe SUP and other generous sponsors, 100 percent of funds raised by paddlers and donors go directly toward this year’s fundraising goal of $500,000. In addition to the support of sponsors, participating paddlers pledge to raise a minimum of $2,000 in donations to paddle with the group and do so through their individual and/or team fundraising pages at tylersdtc.com. Tyler’s Dam That Cancer was created seven years ago by Founder and Executive Director of The Flatwater Foundation, Mark Garza, to raise awareness of the importance of mental health support after experiencing the impact of his father’s Stage IV cancer diagnosis.
About the Flatwater Foundation
THE FLATWATER FOUNDATION is an Austin-based, nonprofit dedicated to providing those in the community diagnosed with cancer as well as their families and loved ones access to mental health therapy and family support. The Foundation’s approach combines access to traditional and nontraditional methods of psychological counseling, while encouraging participation in exercise and outdoor activities as a means of providing balance and mental well-being. In addition to its annual fundraising stand-up paddleboarding event, Tyler’s Dam That Cancer, The Flatwater Foundation produces other nontraditional events, partners with the fitness and health community, and builds relationships with the mental health community to break the stigma associated with mental health support and to ensure the awareness of the importance of mental health when coping with a diagnosis.
