SAN CLEMENTE, California - Stand-up paddleboarding legend Candice Appleby has taken her decades of expertise on the water to the digital space with two new online courses through Ocean Academy. Designed for paddlers of all levels, these foundational courses bring Candice’s world-class techniques directly to athletes around the globe, empowering them to refine their stroke and footwork with guidance from one of the sport’s most accomplished champions.

Basics of Stroke Technique for Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Priced at $129, this course is perfect for paddlers looking to master the fundamentals of stroke technique. Candice covers the essential elements of paddle terminology, proper paddle length, and body positioning. Her signature teaching method breaks down the "4-Phases of the Stroke," providing insights into efficient recovery, paddle changes, and bracing for stability in turbulent waters. The course also includes five critical stroke drills designed to improve power, cadence, recovery, and bracing skills. These drills are a game-changer for paddlers who want to increase their efficiency and strength on the water.

Basics of Footwork for Stand-Up Paddleboarding

For $129, the footwork course delves into the subtleties of stance, balance, and maneuvering. Lessons include footwork terminology, bracing techniques, and how to assume the “surf stance.” Candice also introduces land drills to build comfort and confidence in footwork, as well as on-water drills aimed at mastering board control, cross-stepping, and taking purposeful steps while paddling. This course equips paddlers with skills to move more freely on their boards, enhancing both confidence and control on the water.

Course Bundle and Special Offer

Both courses are available in a bundle for $237, offering a well-rounded introduction to the core techniques every paddler needs. Those interested can find the courses on OceanAcademyUSA.com under the Courses tab. With these courses, paddlers everywhere can learn from Candice’s expertise in a structured, accessible way, wherever they are.

Expanding Reach Through Ocean Academy

While Candice already has a full coaching schedule, her goal with Ocean Academy is to share her expertise beyond the athletes she coaches directly. A typical week sees Candice leading 10-12 private coaching sessions for clients aged 50 to 60 and even younger athletes, including an 82-year-old SUP surfer she affectionately calls “Duke,” who she coaches in the waves weekly. Candice’s Ocean Academy courses provide paddlers worldwide with access to the same high-level instruction and drills she uses in her one-on-one sessions. “These courses are the building blocks of everything I teach and are for everyone,” Candice says.

In addition to individual sessions, Candice leads a training club and occasionally partners with fellow Dana Outrigger teammate Grace Hardy to offer OC-1 (outrigger canoe) clinics, sharing her paddling knowledge across water sports.

Ocean Academy’s Mission and Approach

Ocean Academy’s mission is rooted in safety, encouragement, and the joy of learning on the water. Candice’s formula—Fun + Encouragement = Confidence—underpins every aspect of the Academy’s approach. Whether paddling in calm waters or challenging surf, the Academy’s curriculum and coaching are built around making athletes feel safe and prepared to progress confidently.
