NORDHAUSEN, Germany - There was quite a bit of pressure to return to Germany for the EuroTour this year and stop #6 in Nordhausen and the 5th Grand Slam of the season didn’t disappoint. This sleepy small town in Central Germany really came alive over the weekend and we saw the biggest participation so far this season, with 12 nations and the largest kids/Junior turnout of the 2021 Euro Tour.

On the womens side it was yet again Esperanza Barreras taking the win for the third time this season. Esperanza is clearly showing her intentions for the overall title this season. In second place the Natalia Novitskaia was the only one that came close to the champion, and showed that in flat water she’s a serious contender for the win. Fresh off her National crown last weekend was talent Petronella Van Malsen that always looked solid in 3rd place. Behind her youngster Anais Guyomarch came in 4th place followed closely in 5th by Tanja Ecker. Also, a special mention goes to the local hero Susanne Lier that came in 6th after playing the organizer/racer role all week in her hometown event.

On the mens side the race had one name the whole way, and it was Normen Weber. Norman had the best use of the superlap option, and in the first lap when the top eight competitors were all together in a group and two of them broke off; he sprinted quietly on the right side and left everyone behind to make a gap all the way to the finish line.
The Netherlands duo formed by Joep Van Bakel & Donato Freens made the best out of their break and finished 2nd and 3rd in a well played race. Behind them the chase group formed by Claudio Nika and Ethan Bry went 4th & 5th; with an impressive performance by Peter Weidert only seconds behind in 6th.

With many of the Juniors turning heads at the main event in the morning, the kids race in the afternoon was the highlight of the day. The event's youngest competitor was only 2-years-old (paddled with mom of course). And we had some impressive battles between 5-years-old that showed that Germany has a bright future ahead. The day easily belonged to them, and all of them were winners.

Right after the kids race we had the SIC Maui One Design race, that saw sprint action for the delight of the competitors. The concept of all riders using the same board, and Kids, Pro’s and Amateurs mix it up on a tight course for the spectators delight.
