SEATTLE, Washington – Standup for the Cure 501c3 does it again. With support from Presenting Partners Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Boardworks Surf the 2nd Annual event at Lake Sammamish State Park doubled attendance and fundraising efforts of the previous year. With a winning combination of Fun, Compassion, Live Music, Great Food and Paddling the Standup for the Cure community continues to grow. “Our mission to save lives through early breast cancer detection while having fun seems to resonate in every community we visit.” Said Dan Van Dyck, Executive Director of Standup for the Cure.

Compassion and empathy proved to win out even when the smoky air and rain threatened to be a spoiler. Paddlers and non-paddlers of all ages and abilities got out of bed early on the last weekend of summer to join the SUFTC family for an incredible day of paddling, racing, camaraderie and selflessness. The day began with an inspiring blessing performed by Auntie Manu with the Manuiki Foundation as a tribute to our honored Survivors. Once the tears were wiped from our cheeks, hundreds adorned in the official SUFTC jerseys marched toward the water for the “Sea of Pink” 2.5 k and 5k race. The festivities continued through the afternoon with live entertainment with the extremely talented Whiney Monge’, Happy Hour hosted by Georgetown Brewing Co and a fantastic lunch provided by Trapper’s Sushi and Ivar’s.

As if that wasn’t enough, professional waterman Zane Schweitzer was on hand all day offering private Standup Paddling Lessons while SUFTC Ambassador Lindsay Lambert ran multiple yoga sessions on the water as well as the beach. The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Mammogram Unit was also on site with their staff performing mammograms for participants fulfilling the third part of Standup for the Cure’s mission. “Our slogan is ‘Have Fun and Save Lives’” according to local Sportscaster and SUFTC Board member Mike Ferreri “We aim to introduce folks to our healthy lifestyle in a festive atmosphere while raising money to cover the cost of breast cancer screening for the underserved. Early detection is key.”

Standup for the Cure’s Media Partners Komo News, Komo Radio, Star 101.5 and Seattle Refined know firsthand the effects Breast Cancer has on individuals and their loved ones. The news anchors and personalities have adopted SUFTC as a vehicle to inform the public of the importance of early detection. Following their lead, local partners Eastside FC, Alaska Airlines and Cascade Mountain Tech have pitched in to help ensure a successful event.

Donations continue to be accepted through the Crowdrise website HERE. More information and event details can be found HERE or via Twitter at @StandUp4TheCure, and on Facebook @StandUpfortheCure.
