World Record Update From Alex Mauer

DENVER, Colorado - Colorado River Surfer, Alex Mauer, has been hard at work training for his upcoming world record attempt - Alex is planning to set a new record for the longest time surfing a wave. It's been a long winter for him up in Colorado, but that does;'t mean he's been slacking up there. Since his last update, Alex has been keeping the training going, staying busy and maintaining focus on his goal. Here's the latest from him...

Words by Alex Mauer.

alex-training-2The two most important keys to my record attempt will be strength and endurance. I must ensure my body has the core endurance it needs to balance on a wave for hours. Additionally, I need to make sure I have the arm and leg strength to continue paddling and standing for the duration. To me those are easy to work on. My biggest concern is time on the wave. This is most difficult for me because of how far the wave is from me, how much I am working and runoff. Overcoming these obstacles, which also encompasses a lot of mental preparation, is the key to my successful record attempt.

My brother, a gold medalist in power lifting, tailored a regimen for me that covers all the bases. Colorado winters make it easy to want to stay in and I have found smallest things to continue my training throughout the course of my day. Something as simple as balancing on one leg while at work or skipping a step while walking up the staircases, ensures I am staying active even when I don’t get in a full work out before or after work.

I designed a paddling simulator for race and technique training during the winter months. I utilize that while catching up on my new favorite show Game of Thrones. My Glide Sesh, as a balance board, and my bosu ball have been to extremely useful tools also added to my routine when the weather is trying to keep me down.

I have been researching how to train my equilibrium to balance out while looking at moving water for such a long period of time. More on that in the next installment. At this time I am just stoked at the training. I know I will break the record and will have also gained so much knowledge for future endeavors.
