5. 20th Annual Hanohano Challenge Starts 2016 Off With A Bang
Heat Score - 75
Once again, Mission Bay in San Diego hosted the 20th Annual Hanohano Huki Ocean Challenge and the event did not disappoint. With gloomy skies for the majority of the day, the attitudes and demeanors of the athletes and spectators were anything but. Every direction you looked you saw smiles and heard laughter and cheers. The Hanohano is notorious for being a classic event with nothing but fun on offer and this year it once again lived up to that reputation. Read more about the 2016 Hanohano HERE.
4. Fiona Wylde’s Top 10 SUP Destinations
Heat Score - 79
At the ripe young age of 18-years-old, Starboard and Werner Paddles athlete Fiona Wylde has traveled the world and back again. In 2015 alone Fiona went to Japan, all over the mainland U.S., Europe, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and more, so to say she’s well traveled is an understatement. Seeing as she’s been all over the world and getting to stand up paddle in amazing places we wanted to get Fiona’s opinion of where her top SUP destinations are located. Check out what she had to say HERE.
3. Aggressive Shark Encounters With SUPs Being Reported On Maui
Heat Score - 88
When we enter the oceans and waterways we are entering a realm in which we do not control. The creatures that call these bodies of water home are the true masters and we are merely taking a step, or in this case, paddle into their world. It is somewhat unsettling to report that in the waters off Maui, Hawaii there have been multiple incidents lately involving sharks becoming aggressive with paddle boards. Hawaii News Now reports that on Saturday January 23, 2016 a shark had bit a tourist’s paddle board about a half mile off the coast of Maui in Wailea. Read more HERE.
2. Kai Lenny & Mo Freitas SUP Peahi
Heat Score - 94
El Niño has been kind to surfers this winter season. With what seems like back-to-back-to-back swells there is nonstop fun for the wave riding stand up paddlers. Pro stand up paddle athletes Kai Lenny (Naish) and Mo Freitas (Focus SUP) are just a couple of the guys that have been benefitting from these recent swells and they have been getting some time in at the infamous Peahi, a.k.a Jaws. Watch the video HERE.
