Want to boost your paddling performance without even touching the water? This land-based workout routine, demonstrated by World Champion paddler Connor Baxter, is designed to improve your strength, endurance, and power. The best part? You can do it anywhere, anytime, and with absolutely no equipment!
The Workout:
This routine focuses on a series of bodyweight exercises:
- Pull-ups: 10 reps, 6 sets. Rest for 30 seconds to 1 minute between sets.
- Push-ups: 10-15 reps, 6 sets. Rest for 30 seconds to 1 minute between sets.
- Squats: 5-10 reps, 6 sets. Rest for 30 seconds to 1 minute between sets.
- Lunges: 10 reps, 6 sets. Rest for 30 seconds to 1 minute between sets.
- Jumping lunges: 10 reps, 6 sets. Rest for 30 seconds to 1 minute between sets.
- Sit-ups: 10 reps, 6 sets. Rest for 30 seconds to 1 minute between sets.
Making it Harder:
- Add weight: If you have access to weights, incorporate them into the exercises (e.g., weighted vests for squats and lunges).
- Increase reps: Gradually increase the number of repetitions for each exercise.
- Reduce rest time: Shorten the rest periods between sets to increase the intensity.
Making it Easier:
- Modify exercises: If you can't perform a full pull-up, try assisted pull-ups using a resistance band.
- Do fewer reps: Start with fewer repetitions and gradually increase the number as you get stronger.
- Increase rest time: If the routine is too challenging, increase the rest time between sets.
Benefits:
This workout routine will help you:
- Increase strength: Build upper and lower body strength essential for paddling.
- Improve endurance: Enhance your stamina to paddle longer distances.
- Boost power: Develop explosive power for faster strokes and improved acceleration.
- Prevent injuries: Strengthen core muscles to improve stability and reduce the risk of injury.
Consistency is Key:
To see the best results, aim to perform this workout routine 2-3 times per week. Remember to listen to your body and adjust the workout as needed.
