Getting a new race board at an event can be exciting, but setting it up correctly is crucial, especially with a big race on the horizon. This guide, presented by Connor Baxter and Starboard SUP, provides a rundown of essential steps to ensure your board is race-ready.

Initial Board Inspection

Before anything else, thoroughly inspect your new board:

  • Rub down the board: Check for any damages along the rails and other areas.
  • Feel for imperfections: Use your hands to identify any potential holes or issues.

Handle Placement

Handle placement is a matter of personal preference, but here's a pro tip:

  • Staggered placement: If you prefer to have your board on the left side, position the left handle on the furthest back setting and the right handle on the furthest front setting. This staggered setup provides better control, especially in windy conditions.

Leash Setup

Starboard boards offer flexibility in leash placement:

  • Tail placement: Traditionally, the leash is placed at the tail of the board.
  • Front placement: Some racers prefer placing the leash string towards the front to avoid stepping on it during buoy turns.

Consider these factors when choosing your leash setup:

  • Leash type: Calf leashes can help prevent you from stepping on the leash.
Comfort and habit: Stick with what feels comfortable and familiar, especially on race day.

Camel Pack Considerations

For longer races, a camel pack is essential.

  • Backpack vs. Waist: Choose between a backpack or waist camel pack based on comfort and the amount of water you need to carry. Waist packs can handle heavier loads, while backpacks offer convenience with the hose placement.

Race Day Preparation

Beyond the board, prepare your body and mind:

  • Mental preparation: Visualize the race course and mentally rehearse your performance.
  • Nutrition: Load up on electrolytes and supplements in the week leading up to the race.
  • Rest: Ensure you get adequate sleep by avoiding screen time before bed.

By following these steps, you'll be well-prepared to tackle your race with confidence and optimal performance. Check out the full video walkthrough with Connor Baxter below.
